Keep reading for a quick guide to EV charging basics and the local charging stations.
Where Can I Charge My EV
One of the things that most new EV drivers are concerned with is where to charge their vehicle. While finding a charging station was an issue when EVs and other electrified vehicles were new to the world, they’re quite common now. There are more than 50,000 charging stations and over 170,000 charging ports across the United States and more and more are being added every day. In Tennessee alone, there are currently 400 charging stations and you’ll find 16 stations within a 15-mile radius of Jefferson City. That number will continue to grow as EVs become more mainstream and you can check out the nearby charging stations on sites like Way and EVgo.
In addition to public charging stations, you can also charge your EV at home, which you’ll likely find is your preferred charging method because it allows you to recharge overnight without any additional trips during the day.
How Much Does EV Charging Cost?
The cost of charging your EV will vary based on the electricity rates in your area. In general, public, and commercial electricity rates are higher than residential rates, so you’ll spend less on EV charging if you charge at home. Currently, the average cost of EV charging is $0.05 a mile, which is far less than the average cost of gasoline ($0.13 per mile).
How Do Charging Stations Work?
Charging your electric vehicle (EV) is as easy as charging your phone. Simply plug your electric vehicle such as the 2024 Blazer EV, into the EV charging station, and it will deliver electricity to your car's battery.
How Long Does EV Charging Take?
How long it takes to recharge your EV depends on how large the battery is and the charging method that you choose. There are three charging methods.
Level 1 Charging – Charging with a standard 120-volt outlet found in homes is the slowest method, providing only two to five miles of driving range per hour
Level 2 Charging – This level uses a 240-volt (residential) or 208-volt (commercial) outlet and can charge your vehicle much faster, at a rate of 10 to 60 miles of range per hour. For a PHEV, you can likely recharge the battery in under an hour.
Level 3 Charging – The fastest charging method, known as DC Fast Charging, can provide an EV with up to 100 miles of range in just 20 minutes or fully recharge it in under an hour.
